Symptoms Difficulty walking quickly, pain during intercourse, difficulty sleeping comfortably, decreased ability to perform weight bearing activities. Diagnosis Functional pelvic test, ultrasound, Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire, patient reported symptoms and history. Prevention Core strengthening exercises, pelvic floor muscle strengthening. Treatment Manual therapy, physiotherapy prescribed exercises, activity modification.
Pelvic floor weakness

Definition Decreased strength in the pelvic floor muscles. Prevalence Almost all postnatal women have some degree of weakness, not necessarily a ‘disorder’ Symptoms Stress incontinence, faecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pain during sex, pelvic pain. Diagnosis Uroflow test, pelvic exam. Prevention Pelvic floor muscle exercise pre and post delivery, adequate recovery after birth. Treatment Pelvic floor strengthening exercises, biofeedback, physiotherapist prescribed exercises.
Urinary incontinence

Definition Loss of bladder control due to weakened pelvic floor. Prevalence Postpartum estimated prevalence between 13% to 47%. Symptoms Leaking urine. Diagnosis Bladder diary, ultrasound, urodynamic testing. Prevention Pelvic floor muscle strengthening before birth, adequate recovery after birth. Treatment Pelvic floor strengthening exercises, lifestyle changes, bladder training.
Back pain

Definition Pain or discomfort occurring anywhere along the spine or back. Prevalence Affects 50-80% of pregnant women. Symptoms Dull ache, burning, sharp pain in lower pain, one-sided pain. Diagnosis Patient report on medical history, physical exam. Prevention Avoiding excessive weight gain during pregnancy, postural exercises. Treatment Physiotherapist prescribed exercise program, acupuncture, sleep position modification, soft tissue massage, Yoga or Pilates.
Wrist and thumb pain (De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis)
Definition Localised pain from the wrist to the thumb commonly due to inflammation of the tendons. Prevalence Symptoms Pain in thumb, wrist and forearm, swelling, tenderness, clicking/snapping sound at wrist. Diagnosis Finkelstein test Prevention Avoiding tasks that worsen pain, altering feeding positions. Treatment Physiotherapist prescribed exercises, splinting or taping, activity modification, massage.
